If you’re planning a trip to Japan, Osaka and Kobe are probably on your itinerary already. But what are you planning to see and do nearby?
Mount Rokko is one of the region’s most stunning outdoor destinations, with spectacular views over Osaka bay and the city of Kobe. Plus, it’s easily accessible from both cities, making it an easy and exciting day trip.
If you haven’t heard about this incredible natural attraction, don’t miss out! Keep reading for our full destination guide, plus tips to make your visit unforgettable.
Visiting Mount Rokko
Most visitors in Japan focus their time on the country’s fast-paced urban centers. But the countryside is well worth a visit, too.
Mount Rokko is easily accessible from Kobe or Osaka, with plenty of options for transit and arrival. Intrepid visitors might prefer to hike up from the city, but if you’re visiting for the views, the Mount Rokko cable car is your best bet.
See and Do
If you have time to spare in your itinerary, the activities on Mount Rokko make it worth staying for an extra day or two.
Photographers and nature fanatics will enjoy the peak’s panoramic views, unique alpine plant life, and peaceful wooded walking trails. Other seasonal outdoor activities in the park also include golf, pedal boating, fishing, go-cart racing, and skiing.
Not feeling up to a whole lot of adventure? No worries.
You can easily occupy your time on Mount Rokko shopping, dining, and exploring indoor attractions like the Rokko International Music Box Museum and the Rokko Country House.
Your best bet is to book a multi-day package, especially during ski season.
That way, you won’t feel rushed at any of the mountaintop attractions. Plus, you’ll have plenty of time to hit the slopes. The Rokkosan Tourist Pass is an excellent value.
No trip to Japan is complete without visiting a traditional onsen, or natural hot spring.
Mount Rokko is home to one of the country’s oldest and best-known onsens, and it’s totally worth your time to stop in for a soak. There’s no better way to soothe your tired muscles after a long day of outdoor excitement.
Nearby Attractions
Mount Rokko isn’t the only outdoor attraction in Kobe.
You’ll most likely be able to see Nunobiki Falls on your way up to Mount Rokko. But, this attraction is definitely worth its own visit.
The park features four separate waterfalls and a variety of hikes ranging from ultra-easy to fairly challenging. There is no admission fee, and you’re welcome to bring your own food and drinks. It’s an excellent option for budget travelers!
Also located along the cable car’s ropeway, the Kobe Nunobiki herb garden is an excellent option for less athletic visitors. It also makes for a nice relaxing stopover between activities if you’re looking to unwind for an hour or two.
Stroll the garden’s well-kept grounds, snap a few photos of the dramatic view over Kobe, and enjoy a steaming cup of herbal tea.
Planning Your Trip
By now, you know enough about visiting Mount Rokko to start planning a trip.
Be sure to schedule well in advance if you’re visiting during peak season. No matter what time of year you visit, plan for a variety of weather conditions throughout the day. You’ll want plenty of layers to protect against the chill as you ascend.
