What is Laser Cutting Technology in Metal Industry

Laser Cutting Technology

A laser is a single color beam of light that has been amplified through the process of optical amplification to stimulate emission of electromagnetic radiations, using a laser machine. There are four types of laser which are:

  1. Gas – laser gas is produced when an electric current is passed through gas inside a laser medium. A gas laser is the first in converting electrical energy into light energy, and the different types of laser gas are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), helium (He), neon (Ne), etc.
  2. Liquid laser – the liquid medium is used to amplify laser light over a range of wavelengths, it disseminates laser light beam near a spectrum of ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR). example of liquid laser is dye laser.
  3. Semiconductor laser- with semiconductor hole and electrons combine at the anode and cathode of a junction to emit radiation like those of light-emitting diode.
  4. Solid-state laser- solid material is used as a medium for producing laser light. Normally a host material is doped with other elements to introduce ion as impurities.

Laser cutting technology is a thermal process which uses either gas, liquid, semiconductor or solid-state lasers to melt material in a localized area. Laser cutting is used for industrial manufacturing applications, to cut materials such as wood, metals, glass, marble, paper, etc. the process of cutting material using a laser is very accurate, precise and it’s cut width is extremely small which is less than 0.001. laser cutting has a wider application because of it’s expert laser cutting service. laser cutting is applied in industries such as medical, aerospace, automotive, electronics, etc.

In metal industries, laser cutting technology is used in cutting or shaping different types of metal materials like aluminum, stainless steel, copper, brass, and many more. However, the commonly used metal is mild steel, carbon steel, and ferrous metals. Whatever the type of metal material, laser cutting can be used to produce smooth cut and clean surfaces. This means that laser cutting can be used to form both simple and complex shapes and because of this, Laser cutting technology in metal industries has the following application:

Engraving and Marking

One of the major applications of metal laser cutting is engraving and marking. Engraving and marking are used to increase the value and legitimacy of products such as adding a bar-code in metal materials and markings in jewelry.

Motor vehicle

Laser metal cut is widely used to cut vehicle bodies made from either mild steel, ferrous metal, and carbon steel. Besides body parts laser cut is used in the cutting and designing of the engines and any other metal vehicle parts.

Medical

Laser-cut is used all through the making of medical equipment ranging from beds, trolleys surgical equipment, aluminum buckets, machine components, etc. however laser-cut titanium is the most exciting because titanium is resistive to corrosion and thus is titanium is used for joining with human bones.

Aerospace

Aerospace is also one of the largest use of laser cutting because of its versatile and accuracy required for the cutting and construction of aerospace materials.

Metallic kitchen equipment

Laser-cut 430 grade stainless steel is one of the most commonly known methods of making stainless kitchen equipment like stainless spoons, plates, etc.

There you have the few application of laser cutting. To summarize, besides the above mention applications today laser cutting is also applied in medicine to perform even surgeries. However, the list of metal laser cutting application is very wide, this shows that laser cutting can be used to serve many applications in the industries we have today.

  1. Laser marking is so much more versatile than some might believe; what seems like an efficient method of design is also an effective marketing technique and prevents forgery, among other things. Great article.

  2. I read this piece of writing fully on the topic of the comparison of most up-to-date and previous technologies, it’s amazing article.
