There’s more to college marketing than uploading a few photos and calling it a day though. You’ve got to work hard if you want to be relevant and draw in a crowd. In order to do that, you’ll need to do your best to avoid these common college marketing mistakes.

1. Outdated References

Everyone can get a nice chuckle from a meme but only if that meme is relevant. Nothing will make a college crowd groan and cringe quite like an outdated reference.

That doesn’t mean that you can’t use memes in your college marketing strategy. By all means, throw one in your PowerPoint presentation about financial aid but make sure that it’s not more than a month or so old. What’s funny one day is boring the next.

2. Misusing Sayings

Another thing that will lend you crickets in an auditorium full of college hopefuls is misused sayings. For example, a common phrase amongst teenagers and young adults is “I can’t even adult today”. This means that the person isn’t looking forward to school/work.

If you use #Adulting in a presentation that shows someone being productive, it’s going to fall flat. The same can be said about meme sayings like yeet. Use them but use them right.

3. You Neglect Your Social Media Page

Your social media page is the perfect place to show off to potential students. Post pictures from the play that the theatre department put on. Do student highlights to brag about the successful people who have come out of your school.

Whatever you do, don’t neglect your social media page. When people are trying to figure out what school they want to go to, you can best believe they’ll visit your page and take note of its emptiness.

4. Keeping Things In-House

When marketing for college, keeping things in-house will be cheaper. You will be limiting yourself if you don’t outsource your advertising though.
