Ways You’re Burning Yourself Out Professionally

Professionally Burning Out

Professional burnout is a problem that affects millions of workers in the U.S. and abroad. Since our livelihood is dependent upon our jobs, we often regard our jobs as the most important things in our lives. In addition to being an unhealthy approach to work – and life in general – this can lead to full-on professional burnout, which can have serious effects on both physical and mental health. However, by recognizing the telltale signs of professional burnout, you can lay the groundwork for fixing it. So, if you regularly exhibit any of the following behaviors, there’s a good chance that professional burnout is on the horizon.

Keeping Uneven Work Hours

In order to maintain a healthy work/life balance, you need to keep a consistent work schedule. For example, if your workdays have lengths that range from eight to sixteen hours, this is both unmanageable and unconducive to having any semblance of a personal life. Unfortunately, many members of the workforce feel compelled to put in copious amounts of unpaid overtime. In some instances, this is done for the purpose of getting ahead and earning promotions. Other times, people have no choice but to work insane hours because of unmanageable workloads and unrealistic deadlines.

Whatever your reason for keeping uneven work hours, you’d do well to nip this problem in the bud. If you’re pushing yourself to the brink in the hope of being promoted, it’s important to realize that work is not – and should not be – your sole purpose in life. Alternatively, if you’re subjecting yourself to endless workdays because of massive workloads and/or unreasonably tight deadlines, let the relevant parties know that you’re consistently overworked and request that workloads and expectations be amended accordingly. Should they prove unamenable to this request, consider searching for employment elsewhere or exploring your legal options.

Remaining in Abusive Work Situations

Given the high degree of importance U.S. culture places on work, it should come as no surprise that many employers won’t hesitate to exploit this. In addition to saddling employees with mountains of work and having no regard for their personal lives, many employers will openly chide workers who dare to speak out against such treatment. People who don’t appreciate unpaid overtime and unrealistic expectations are regarded as lazy, entitled and fundamentally opposed to hard work.

Of course, workplace abuse comes in a variety of other forms. For example, sexual harassment is a huge problem in workplaces across the country, with victims often fearing indifference and/or retribution in response to coming forward. Furthermore, worker intimidation is all-too-common in many places of business. If certain bosses become aware of just how badly an employee needs their job, they’ll work this person into the ground.

Additionally, while many businesses are home to some degree of competition, fiercely competitive workplaces can mentally destroy people who aren’t competitive by nature and don’t enjoy getting ahead at the expense of others. Being trapped in this type of situation can send your stress levels into overdrive and make you dread going into the office.

If any of the above situations are reflective of your work experience, it’s in your best interest to extricate yourself from the situation. Conversely, if you believe someone within the company can help you, reach out to them posthaste.

Not Tending to Your Health

Getting ahead at work at the expense of your health is far from a favorable tradeoff. Physical and mental fitness should always be among your foremost priorities, regardless of how busy you happen to be. Seeing a physician whenever you’re faced with a health concern and talking to a therapist to cope with job-related stress and anxiety can do you a world of good. Furthermore, when it comes to minor health queries, you can save yourself some time by seeking advice remotely. Seeing a Plushcare virtual doctor or scheduling a remote appointment with your regular physician can be a great way to get answers in a timely and convenient manner.

A good job is essential to maintaining a comfortable quality of life. However, if you’re unable to truly enjoy the quality of life you’re working so hard to maintain, what’s the point? When work comes to overtake your existence, the results can be devastating for your long-term health. With this in mind, avoiding professional burnout should be among your foremost priorities. So, if your job has come to take precedence over everything else in your life, there’s no time like the present to rectify this.
