The best time to spot a leaky window is during a rainstorm. Window frame leaks can be serious if it is not treated early and is most often found in the window seal or the caulking. Leaks can be found in wood framed windows because wood expands when the temperature rises and falls. This can often cause the caulking to crack and separate from the glass. Water stains are more than unattractive, they can also cause mold and mildew build up. This can have serious impacts on one’s health and cause problems to the structure of your home as wood tends to rot. As there are so many types of mold, using mold testing kit can help you identify what mold you are facing. Applying new caulking is a good way to repair leaking windows, which will thus save you money on energy costs.
To begin you must place the tube of caulking in the caulking gun and start at the top corners of the window and smoothly apply the caulking where the window frame joins the wall. Use steady pressure on the window and hold the gun in a 45-degree angle. Thereafter flatten the line with a putty knife and caulk the four corners of the frame. Ensure that all pieces of wood meet each other as wood framed windows consist of 4 pieces which can leak at the joining areas. Apply caulking along the inner edges at the point where the glass meets the wood. You should use clear caulking as you will be working close to the glass. Use paint caulking to enable you to paint the caulk and the wood at a later stage.
Check the window frame – If the frame is causing the leak and you can find the gap in the caulk, then all you need to do is apply new caulk to the frame. Ensure that all the old caulk is removed first to get the best results. If your window stripping has worn out then you should remove the operable part of the window first, thereafter, remove the old window stripping and replace it with a new version peel and stick option. However, if you find that your wooden window frames have started to rot, you may need to enlist the help of a professional to replace the frame. Leakages could also occur if the frame was not installed correctly and this is easy to fix by yourself.
In the interim, while you are busy with repairs, if there are heavy rains and you need a quick solution, you may use a rolled-up towel to soak up the water from the area that is leaking. You will need to change this with a dry cloth regularly.
Leakages must be sorted out quickly to prevent damages to the furniture and upholstery in your home from dampness and fog. You should gather enough information to determine whether yours need replacing or repairing.
