11 Simple, Quick & Inexpensive Ways To Improve Your Website’s UX

Share

Sometimes, trying to create the most beautiful website templates, website developers ignore some important UX factors, and this adversely affects the navigation on the site. Then, the website owners can lose many long-term users due to UX mistakes that could be fixed in an hour or two.

We’ve picked up 11 simple tips that can quickly improve your website’s UX!

1. Add spell check to your form fields to improve your website’s UX

How many times you have faced with this: you’ve filled out a long-form, and then click «Send» and encounter an error message! But if you implement HTML5-compliant UI, you will avoid this problem and improve your UX.

The thing is that when a visitor enters an incorrect value, the form instantly shows that he had made a mistake.

2. Use autofocus to save visitor’s time

What determines a best-designed website? You’re right, the well-thought-out details.

After seeing the authorization page, the user should have the possibility to immediately enter the phone number, instead of setting the cursor in the form field.

3. Use informative anchors to improve your websites UX

Anchors like “here”, “read more” or “click on it” can really worsen your UI and UX. Most users won’t have big problems with it, because they see the surrounding text and it is easy for them to understand where a certain link leads to.

But it becomes a real problem for users with visual impairments. Screen readers can read links on the webpage. Blind people can hear anchors, but they won’t see the surrounding text. So, using informative anchors becomes crucial.

4. Use asynchronous script loading to improve UX

Most online services (even Google AdSense) offer an asynchronous loading code by default. Some website owners don’t use this option due to a lack of experience. But this can also adversely affect your website’s UX.

You can avoid these problems by setting up asynchronous script loading, so, for example, the webpage content will be loaded without any problems even if the external script is unavailable.

5. Add blocks of recommendations to improve UX and site performance

Adding a block of recommendations to our website’s interface effective improves the UX. For example, the online stores, that use the “See also” or “Buy with this product” blocks can increase conversion and check averages.

You can add it to the site interface using online services such as Relap or myWidget, as well as using the CMS you’re using.

6. Remove the sidebar to improve the user experience

Jonathan Ive, Apple’s director of design, argues that there should be no extra elements in a good user interface.

Refusing a sidebar is a simple and effective way to remove an excess element from the site’s interface and improve UX. In this case, the improvement of user experience increases the effectiveness of the site.

7. Create visual feedback to animate the interface and make the user happy

Visual feedback interface elements improve UX, helping the visitor to engage with the website more effectively.

For example, you can:

  • Change the button shape/color on the hover.
  • Change the color of the field or use any other visual confirmation when the user fills the form correctly.
  • Change the progress bar as the visitor scrolls through the page.

8. Add space to the page to make the interface more convenient

Free space makes the interface elements more visible, helps users notice the content or functionality he needs. Lots of space improves both UI and UX.

9. Opt for a card-based web design

Mobile and web applications stop using pages in favor of a completely new and personalized experience. It is based on combining many individual content elements. Cards become the new creative design concept.

When it comes to design, the card should have rounded corners and a tiny shadow. Thanks to the rounded corners, the card looks like a separate block of content, and the shadows create a sense of depth.

There are many advantages of card-based web design:

  • The content of the card is divided into semantic blocks – it helps to make reasonable use of the screen space.
  • Cards are a great way to share quick stories.
  • Card-based design has quite an attractive appearance.
  • Cards add a touch of visual piquancy to the design without distracting the user from the content.
  • Due to the functionality and form, cards are an interesting and intuitive interface element.
  • Cards make the content easier to read and perceive.
  • Card-based web design is perfect for both desktops and mobile devices because cards present content in small portions.

10. Increase the size of a search bar

The average length of the search field on most sites is 18 characters, but about 27% of queries do not fit in this field length.

Enlarge your search box to 27 characters and it will enough for 90% of searches.

11. Humanize texts in your subscription forms

As a user, you almost certainly had to deal with newsletter subscription forms, you could even subscribe to them. How did you feel filling out the subscription form? We are sure the form was very simple: you just had to type in your name and email. You filled them out and agreed to the terms. But then you had a feeling that you were working with a robot.

Why not create a more natural approach to creating the subscription form text?

For example, instead of using the classic dull checkboxes like:

  • Name;
  • Email;
  • Password;
  • I agree with your terms and conditions, you can let the user tell a little story about himself!

Forget about the classic style, try inserting fields into a paragraph of text, for example:

“Hi! My mane is (form field) and my email is (form field). I also want to use (form field) as my password when joining the website. I agree with your terms and conditions (checkbox)”!
