Look, I’ve been around the block when it comes to crystals and gemstones. Had my fair share of amethyst clusters on the nightstand, rose quartz in my pocket, you know the drill. But recently I stumbled into something that completely shifted my perspective on what a stone can do for your energy.
I was wandering through The Rocks in Sydney last month – totally unplanned, just killing time before a meeting – when I ducked into Cosmopolitan Jewellers New South Wales. Honestly just wanted to escape the heat for a minute. What happened next? Let’s just say I lost two hours of my life staring at opals.
Here’s the thing nobody tells you about Australian opals. They’re not like other stones that just sit there looking pretty. These things are alive. I mean, obviously they’re not breathing or anything, but the way light moves through them… it’s like watching the northern lights trapped in rock form.
The owner, this guy who’s been dealing opals for decades, he showed me this black opal from Lightning Ridge. Now I thought I knew what black meant. Turns out black opals aren’t actually black – they’ve got this dark body tone that makes all the colors pop like neon signs. Reds, greens, blues, purples, all dancing around as you move the stone.
He told me each opal is completely unique. Not in that “every snowflake is special” way that makes you roll your eyes. Like genuinely, scientifically unique. The way the silica spheres arranged themselves millions of years ago determines the exact color play you see. You literally cannot find two identical opals.
That got me thinking about how we choose stones for ourselves. We read about properties – this one’s for love, that one’s for protection, whatever. But what if the real power is in finding something that speaks specifically to YOU? Not because some book says so, but because when you look at it, something shifts inside.
I ended up buying a boulder opal ring. Nothing fancy, just this piece where the opal runs through ironstone like a river of fire. Every time I catch it in different light, I see something new. Morning light brings out the greens. Afternoon sun? All blues and purples. Under artificial light at night, these orange flashes appear that I swear weren’t there before.
The funny thing is, I didn’t go looking for it. Wasn’t on some spiritual quest to find my power stone or whatever. But sometimes that’s how the best things happen – when you’re not trying so hard.
Since then I’ve been doing more research on opals. Turns out ancient Romans thought they were the most powerful stones because they contained the colors of all other gems. Aboriginal Australians have dreamtime stories about opals being the Creator’s footprint when he came to earth on a rainbow. Even the name comes from Sanskrit, meaning “precious stone.”
But here’s what really gets me. In an age where everything’s mass produced, where you can get the exact same thing as millions of other people with one click, there’s something profound about wearing something that literally cannot be replicated. Your opal is yours alone.
I’m not saying opals are better than other stones. That’s not the point. The point is maybe we need to stop looking for meaning in prescribed lists and start trusting what pulls us in. Maybe the stone that changes your energy is the one that makes you lose track of time just looking at it.
Next time you’re near a good jeweler – and I mean a real one, not some mall chain – take a minute to really look. Don’t read the tags first. Don’t check the prices. Just look. See what calls to you. You might surprise yourself.
And if you ever find yourself in Sydney, well, you know where to lose a couple hours.
