Car Mods and Engine Performance: Everything You Need to Know

Share

Tuning engine performance and installing additional features to tweak efficiency has been common among many car dealers and even vehicle owners in Australia. For those new to this concept, car modding refers to installing new equipment or changing the present vehicle engine to improve performance or fuel consumption. Authentic manufacturers in the country like Prosport supply the parts that help car enthusiasts attain these changes that reduce vehicle weight and bolster fuel efficiency and power.

Although certain modifications aren’t legal in the country, by following strict regulations, safer tuning practices can be carried out with the right expertise and safety standards. But, like all complicated machines, car owners should be wary of the type and intensity of modifications that they make on their vehicles. This is important since a small error or miscalculation can cause a cascade of engine failures, fuel loss and, in some cases, fires.

Things to Keep in Mind While Tuning a Vehicle

  • Take care not to damage or remove sensors, circuits, or systems that track fuel storage data and injection. Newer models always come with onboard computers that utilise this data to maximise engine efficiency. So, removing them will distort the engine’s peak efficiency, resulting in wastage of fuel and improper fuel supply.
  • Any vehicle body frame or equipment that promotes the safety of the driver or the vehicle should not be removed. Whatever the case may be, safety must always be the number one priority and removing important stuff like airbags or crossbars can do more damage than good.
  • Mods that look good and mods that perform well are two entirely different things. So, do the research and ask experts and technicians before diving into the practice. Meanwhile, most of the engine mods out there are mostly for display, and modifying the appearance won’t do much for engine performance.
  • Understand that some modding practices can negate the warranty of the engine parts already present inside the vehicle. Moreover, most sensors or devices have their company limits set by the manufacturers to promote safety and efficiency standards. So, stay within the range and don’t go for the extreme ranges as it can alter fuel efficiency and damage the engine.
  • Go for authentic parts from credible manufacturers like ProSport, and remember that cheap parts don’t necessarily mean good quality or better performance.

Improving Engine Performance: Some of the Best Things to Do

  • Reducing the weight of the vehicle is the most sought after way of improving engine performance. Without it, the amount of fuel required would be less, owing to the reduced drag. So, changing to lighter alloys and dumping the extra frames are the two most common practices implemented to achieve this.
  • Changing the vehicle’s aerodynamics by adding spoilers and aerodynamic fenders help reduce the aerodynamic drag allowing the vehicle to pull more weight.
  • Buying the right set of wheels can be a game-changer considering the purpose applications, whether it’s for drag racing, drift racing or off-road driving. Upgrading the braking systems and tuning the suspensions can also enhance the performance by giving the driver better control of the vehicle.

Performance can also be improved by enhancing fuel consumption using turbochargers and superchargers. Air filters and air dams also provide more air intake into the engine, enabling fuel to mix properly and create ambient combustion without fuel wastage. Speaking of air intakes, efficient exhaust systems also increase the breathability of the engine, enabling the engine cylinders to take in more combustible fuel for generating power.
